A Northern Chinese street snack that can be made using almost any fruit, but the classic of the classic is the sweet-tart hawthorns. If you can get your hands on the hawthorns, making this “not entirely healthy” snack is super easy.
Ingredients
We even feel silly typing out the ingredients, but for completeness, you’ll need:
- 300 g Chinese hawthorns (about 20–25 fruits)
- 200 g white sugar
- 100 ml water
- [Bamboo] skewers
Method
If you follow KOPI, the method is just as straight-forward as the list of ingredients.
Before anything, wash & dry the hawthorns, get sticks that can hold 2-3 fruits ready, and then then make the caramel glazing:
- Add sugar and water to a small pot
- Heat on medium without stirring
- Let it boil until it reaches about 150°C, don’t let it burn
- Once it reaches temperature, lower the heat
When the syrup and the skewers are ready, quickly dip each skewer into the syrup, rotating to coat evenly. Then leave on parchment paper to cool down.
